Abstract

We propose to obtain medium resolution spectra for 32/64 radio-loud quasars with known jet inclination angles. Our goal is to calibrate a recently discovered optical orientation indicator for active galactic nuclei (AGN). This calibration will allow us to determine the geometry and dynamics of broad emission lines regions (BELR) in AGN by looking at the change of emission line properties with disk inclination angle using large samples. Existing physcial results on the BELR geometry are restricted to radio-loud AGN and suffer from small number statistics, since so far definitive inclination measurements required dedicated long-tem radio observations. Our studies will lead to a deeper understanding of AGN and more accurate black hole masses.
