Magellan
(January 2021 to
July 2021)
(Proposals due at noon, Tuesday, October 13, 2020)

The Magellan instrument page is at http://www.lco.cl/telescopes-information/magellan/instruments/instruments/.

Here are the instruments available this semester (January 2021 - July 2021):

Magellan I (Baade)

Magellan II (Clay)

* PI instruments require approval of the instrument PI prior to proposal submission.

Interventions for targets of opportunity (TOO) are possible. The guidelines for Magellan interventions describe the science goals and the responsibilities for the PI and other Magellan observers.

To receive additional information on Magellan telescopes and instruments, you may sign up for a mailing list at the Magellan mailing list server. There are several choices at this URL.

MMT
(1 January to 30 April 2021)
(Proposals due at noon, Tuesday, October 13, 2020)

The MMT homepage for information on all MMT instruments is http://www.mmto.org/instruments/.

Here are the instruments available this trimester:

f/5 Instruments

  • Binospec: queue observing
  • Hectospec: queue observing
  • Hectochelle: queue observing
  • MMIRS [Specs]
Binospec, Hectospec, Hectochelle, and MMIRS are run in queue mode. The TAC welcomes target of opportunity proposals for the queues. Single-object modes available with these instruments allow acquisition of TOO targets. Contact Nelson Caldwell for details.
The TAC also welcomes parallel proposals for the Hectospec and Hectochelle queues. Parallel programs acquire observations with the unused fibers of the main program. Parallel observations are completely transparent to the PIs of standard programs. The PI sets up fields in the normal way. Once the PI submits the fields, the PI of the parallel program assigns targets to unused fibers. Contact Nelson Caldwell for additional details on this operation of Hectospec and Hectochelle.

Hectospec/chelle are not scheduled in Dec-Jan because of a low-temperature operational limit.
  • MMT Cam (f/5 Science Camera): queue observing

f/9 Instruments

f/15 instruments

  • MMT Adaptive Optics System is offline for upgrades;
it should return in 2020C, however it may not be available for proposals until 2021.
  • ARIES with AO system - PI* Instrument
  • CLIO with AO system - PI* Instrument
  • MIRAC/BLINC with AO system - PI* Instrument
(Additional information on MMT AO system)
  • MMT-POL 1.5 micron imaging polarimeter - PI* Instrument

* PI instruments require approval of the instrument PI prior to proposal submission.

FLWO
(Proposals due at noon, Tuesday, October 13, 2020)

FLWO 1.5-m (1 January to 30 April 2021)
(Proposals due at noon, Tuesday, October 13, 2020)

The 1.5-m is a single-object, spectroscopic telescope. Most observations are made in a queue, but scheduled time is also available.
FAST: low resolution, high throughput optical spectrograph (CCD detector)
TRES: high throughput, optical echelle spectrograph (CCD detector)

FLWO 1.2-m (1 January to 30 April 2021)
(Proposals due at noon, Tuesday, October 13, 2020)

The 1.2-m is an imaging telescope with a wide-field optical camera. Most observations are made in a queue, but scheduled time is also available.
Keplercam: Optical camera with a 23 by 23 field-of-view

For the online abstract, please do not exceed 100 words or use special characters.

The cover page target list is a two line entry that summarizes the number of objects and ranges in their magnitudes and coordinates.

See this page for directions on proposal preparation.

If using TeX or LaTex, please generate the a Postscript file using

       dvips -Ppdf -o filename
to generate better computer viewable fonts, and use ps2pdf to convert it to Acrobat format (PDF).

PDF files summarizing previous time allocations are availabled for 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Future proposal deadlines are

  • Tuesday, April 12, 2016 for July 9 2016 to January 2017 (Magellan)
  • Tuesday, June 14, 2016 for September 1 to December 31 2016 (MMT and FLWO)
  • Tuesday, October 11, 2016 for January 1, 2017 to April 30 2017 (MMT and FLWO)
  • Tuesday, October 11, 2016 for January 2017 to July 2017 (Magellan)
