Second, the most convenient location for a stay outside the Park is El Portal,
a small community on Route 140 near the western or "Arch Rock" entrance to the
Park. Unfortunately, the roadbed for Route 140 was seriously damaged in the
great flood of 1997 and is still under repair. As a result, Route 140 is
closed all day long (currently 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
making this approach to the park impractical for most of you.
AVOID using this entrance. Again, consult your travel agent.
